The book opens with an account of the vision that summoned Ezekiel to his prophetic calling. Ezekiel describes his vision as an elaborate and complex image that symbolizes the majesty of Yahweh and proclaims Yahweh's sovereignty over all the nations of the earth. The prophet is so overcome by the vision that he falls on his face. The chrysanthemums are symbolic of her children, and she is very proud of them. When Elisa's husband compliments her on her flowers, she is proud, and "on her face there [is] a little smugness"(). She is happy and pleased by her ability to nurture these beautiful flowers.

So, calling the book Lord of the Flies brings the boys' primitive violence front and center. Now let's break it down. "Lord" is a word of power, and the desire for power drives the book's central conflict: who gets to decide what the boys will do? "Flies," on the other hand, connote death and decay. As a book that celebrates reading, literacy, and the importance of the written word, Fahrenheit is an accessible read. It would be pretty ironic if Bradbury went all postmodern and difficult on us, seeing as how this story is a kind of call to arms—or better, a call to books.
