Lesson Plan: What does God look like? The Goal: The goal of this lesson is to help young teens begin to understand the abstract idea of an invisible God. We want to open them to the idea of a relationship with “God the Father” beyond the more concrete idea of God the man Jesus. Follow this lesson with my lesson on God’s attributes. Jesus loves unconditionally just like God. “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God,” (Colossians ). If you want to see God, look at Jesus. 2. God looks like you. Genesis says, “God created man in His own image ” In other words, if you want to know what God looks like, look in the mirror.

The same God who legally justifies us is the One who yearns for us from the core of his deepest being. As Goodwin reminds us, God’s children must know that their sins do not push God farther away from them; they pull him closer, like a father who wants to embrace an afflicted child. Abridged from Because Nothing Looks Like God by Lawrence and Karen Kushner, What Does God Look Like? has been specially adapted to board book format to delight and inspire younger readers. Much has been written about the importance of reading simple, beautiful books to babies and preschoolers to stimulate brain development.

Imagine you grew up learning the Law of Moses, doing good works and observing the commands that God had given to His people Israel. Now, all of a sudden, you’re told that Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God, the long-awaited Messiah, the seeking savior whose death on the cross covers your sin. And all you have to do is believe in Him.   The difference between a dad like that our God who disciplines us in love, is that God never, never feels contemptuous of us. In other words, a dad in his sinful meanness might say, “You are such an idiot. You always do that,” and maybe hit them. And his words are contemptuous. They are despising. God never says, “You always do that.
